Toyota to expand RAV4 PHEV range with new model in Australia

Toyota is expanding its plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) lineup with the upcoming release of the RAV4 GXL 2WD model, scheduled to arrive in Australian showrooms in early 2027. This new variant is expected to be the most affordable version of the RAV4 PHEV range, potentially undercutting competitors like the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

Technical comparisons between the Toyota RAV4 PHEV and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV show both vehicles utilize 225 kW power outputs. The Toyota model features a 2.5-liter engine capable of 0-100 km/h acceleration in 6 seconds, while the Mitsubishi uses a 2.4-liter engine with a 0-100 km/h time of 7.9 seconds.

The Australian market for mid-size PHEV SUVs is increasingly competitive, with the BYD Sealion 6 becoming a top seller in 2025. Other notable competitors in this segment include various models from Chinese manufacturers such as Chery, Geely, GWM Haval, Jaecoo, and MG.
