Trabzon Airport traffic rises as new sea-reclamation airport project advances

Trabzon Airport is undergoing significant changes due to both current traffic trends and a massive upcoming infrastructure project. As of late August 2026, aircraft traffic at the airport increased by 1% compared to the previous year, reaching 18,653 flights. However, passenger numbers remained relatively stagnant, totaling approximately 2.7 million, with a marginal increase of 0.04%. While domestic passenger traffic saw a slight rise of 0.2%, international passenger traffic experienced a 1% decrease.

To address long-term capacity needs, the New Trabzon Airport project is moving forward. Expected to cost 45.65 billion lira, the new facility will be built on 97 million tons of sea reclamation and is scheduled to begin service in 2033. The project, which has received a positive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, includes a 110,000 square meter terminal building and a 6,000-meter protective breakwater. Once completed, it will join Rize-Artvin and Ordu-Giresun as major airports in the Eastern Black Sea region built on reclaimed land.
