Trabzon fishers ready new season, hopeful for palamut catch
Fishers around Trabzon’s Yoroz port are completing maintenance on their vessels ahead of the Black Sea fishing season that opens on 1 September. Boats are being hauled ashore for painting, sanding and mechanical repairs, and net work has largely been finished.
Captains such as Resul Yılmaz and Rahmi Şahin say the weather is favorable and they expect a strong haul of palamut (mackerel) and hamsi (anchovies). Yılmaz noted that the season’s equipment is now in place and expressed confidence that “palamut will be there” and that a “blessed season” could follow. The preparations are slated to finish by the start of the new season, with fishing communities looking forward to improved catches after a costly previous year.
