Overview

In early July 2026, fishers in Trabzon’s Yoroz port were completing vessel maintenance—painting, sanding, and net work—ahead of the Black Sea fishing season that opens on 1 September. Captains expressed confidence that the weather would be favorable and that catches of palamut (mackerel) and hamsi (anchovies) would be strong.

By late July, Nejat Demircan of Ayancık in Sinop province landed the first vonoz, a young cod caught on 25 July. The catch was released back into the sea and was hailed as an auspicious sign of abundance for the forthcoming season, boosting optimism among local fishers.

A few days later, crews in Tekirdağ’s Süleymanpaşa district, led by veteran İdris Şeremet, were finalising boat repairs and net upgrades. They reported unusually strong pomfret migrations and plentiful hamsi and sardines, citing both traditional predictors and modern sonar technology.

Meanwhile, strong winds, high waves and rip‑current risks prompted the Meteorology General Directorate to warn of gale‑force breezes along the north‑western Black Sea coast. Local authorities temporarily banned sea entry from 31 July to 1 August (with some areas extending to 2 August) in districts of Tekirdağ, Kırklareli, Sakarya and Kocaeli. Coast‑guard and police patrols displayed red flags to enforce the closures, underscoring the weather challenges that could affect the upcoming fishing season.
