Trabzon hazelnut damage drops to near zero following pest control efforts
Multi-faceted efforts to combat the invasive brown marmorated stink bug in Trabzon, Turkey, have successfully reduced hazelnut crop damage from over 10% last year to nearly zero this season.
The strategy combined chemical and biological methods. Authorities sprayed approximately 30,000 wintering sites and utilized pheromone traps following an 'attract-and-kill' approach. A major component of the biological control involved the release of approximately 3 million samurai wasps, which were produced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry over a two-year period to parasitize the pest's eggs.
İsa Kaplan, the Trabzon Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, noted that while the impact on hazelnut yields has been minimized, vigilance remains necessary as the pest can persist in an area for decades. Additionally, Kaplan warned that rainfall has recently triggered powdery mildew, a fungal disease affecting some crops.
