Citrus Longhorned Beetle infestation in Turkey
Overview
The Citrus Longhorned Beetle, also known as the ‘Dracula bug’, has emerged as a threat to hazelnut production in Turkey’s Black Sea region. After being managed in Trabzon, the pest was detected in the Fındıklı district of Rize.
Believed to have entered the country via imported ornamental plants from East Asia, the beetle’s larvae damage trees by boring into the cambium and wood, which disrupts nutrient transport and can kill the trees. In response, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has implemented quarantine measures in affected areas.
