Trabzon medical facility records rare double-uterus twin birth
A rare medical phenomenon known as “dicavitary twin pregnancy” has been documented in Trabzon, Turkey. Serenay Atagün, a 28-year-old woman with uterus didelphys (double uterus), successfully gave birth to twin girls, Nil and Ada, at 33 weeks via cesarean section.
Following three previous unsuccessful IVF attempts that resulted in miscarriages, Dr. Ufuk Yılmaz at Medical Park Karadeniz Hospital implemented a specialized procedure. One embryo was transferred into each of the two separate uteri, resulting in simultaneous pregnancies in both uterine cavities.
Medical experts describe this as a “one in a million” occurrence. Dr. Yılmaz noted that this is only the third recorded case globally where such a pregnancy was achieved specifically through IVF, with the other two cases occurring in Turkey and China. After a period in intensive care, the twins were discharged from the hospital in healthy condition.
