COP31 preparations: Turkey announces climate and infrastructure goals in Trabzon

In preparation for the COP31 summit, Turkish officials held the 'Blue Dialogue' program in Trabzon, focusing on ocean conservation, the blue economy, and climate resilience. Murat Kurum, the COP31 President and Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, emphasized that the upcoming Antalya summit should serve as an 'Implementation COP' to turn diplomatic discussions into concrete investments and actions.

Key environmental initiatives discussed include a 35 percent electrification target by 2035 and a large-scale ecological restoration project in Fethiye Gulf covering 600 hectares. Kurum also noted a 15 percent improvement in fish stocks and highlighted the importance of protecting marine ecosystems from land-based pollution.

In terms of infrastructure, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced plans for a green container port by 2030. He also detailed major transportation projects in the Black Sea region, including a high-speed rail network connecting Samsun, Trabzon, and Sarp, which aims to reduce travel time between Samsun and Trabzon to two hours. Additionally, a new urban rail system in Trabzon is expected to serve 150,000 passengers daily.
