Trabzon New Airport project enters foundation stage

Construction has entered the foundation stage for the New Trabzon Airport project in Turkey, which will be built on reclaimed land in the Black Sea. Following the completion of marine drilling and seabed studies, the project is moving toward the foundation phase.

The massive infrastructure project involves filling 97 million tons of material into the sea to create approximately 3 million square meters of new land. To protect the structure from waves, a 6,000-meter breakwater will be constructed. The facility is designed to handle 10 million passengers annually and will feature a 110,000-square-meter terminal building, a 3,000-meter runway capable of accommodating large-bodied aircraft, and a 1,250-vehicle indoor parking garage.

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu recently inspected the ongoing seabed drilling operations from a vessel to receive technical updates. The project, estimated to cost 45.65 billion lira, is scheduled to enter service in 2033. Once completed, it will replace the existing airport that has been in operation since 1957.
