Trabzon begins construction on 16.2-km urban rail system
The construction of the Trabzon Urban Rail Transit System has officially commenced with a groundbreaking ceremony held at the Hüseyin Avni Aker Millet Bahçesi. The project is being coordinated by the Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality and the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.
The first phase of the project covers a 16.2-kilometer route featuring 16 stations, stretching from the Akçaabat Karayolları 10th Regional Directorate to the Trabzon Airport. The line will connect key locations including the City Hospital, various universities, stadiums, and commercial centers. A significant portion of the track will be constructed underground via tunnels to minimize urban disruption.
The project has a reported cost of 32.3 billion Turkish Lira. It is being implemented through a partnership between Kalyon İnşaat and Makyol İnşaat. Once completed, the system is expected to serve approximately 87,000 to 150,000 passengers daily, significantly reducing travel times across the city.
