Trabzon tourism grapples with cruise ship cancellations and limited local spending

Cruise operator Astro Grande has repeatedly canceled its scheduled calls at Trabzon’s port, and similar cancellations have occurred on the parallel Batumi (Georgia) leg of the itinerary. The disruptions are linked to the operator’s routing and operational decisions rather than specific shortcomings of Trabzon’s facilities, highlighting a broader challenge for regional cruise tourism.

In the coastal districts of Çaykara and Maçka, visitor numbers swell during the summer months, especially to attractions such as Uzungöl and the Sumela Monastery. However, tour buses often travel directly to these sites without stopping in town centers, leaving local shops, cafés and artisans with minimal sales. Local officials, tourism agencies and operators are urged to redesign itineraries, add stop‑over points and improve infrastructure so that tourists spend time and money in the districts themselves.
