Trading Card Game market expands through retail surges and digital platforms
The Trading Card Game (TCG) market is experiencing significant growth, driven by intense consumer demand for both physical and digital experiences. In South Korea, the popularity of TCGs is impacting retail sectors. At the IPARK Mall in Seoul, a pop-up store for ‘Riftbound’—a new TCG based on Riot Games’ League of Legends universe—attracted approximately 17,000 visitors in its first 11 days, generating over 1.1 billion won in revenue. Additionally, the Pokémon Card Shop at the same location sees daily ‘open runs’ with customers waiting from the early morning to secure limited stock.
On a global scale, the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has teased a new service aimed at the Pokémon TCG market. The proposed service would allow users to open card packs via mobile devices, with all digital acquisitions backed by physical cards. Users could store their cards in a digital vault for secondary trading or request delivery of the physical items. This move suggests an expansion of the TCG ecosystem from niche Web3 startups into major institutional platforms, aiming to capitalize on the high demand for collectibles and the complexities of the resale market.
