Traditional Chinese Medicine undergoes digital and scientific modernization

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is undergoing significant digital and scientific modernization. Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine has launched an online portal to make historical texts, such as the ‘Zhouhou Beiji Fang’, accessible to a broader audience. This initiative translates classical emergency treatments and seasonal health advice into digestible digital modules, while also highlighting historical figures like the physician Bao Gu.

Technological integration is also advancing through the use of Artificial Intelligence and robotics. Research is underway to standardize diagnostics—such as pulse and tongue analysis—using multispectral cameras and sensors to convert subjective observations into quantifiable data. National action plans in China aim to expand these intelligent technologies and medical datasets through 2030.

On the scientific front, TCM is facing increased scrutiny via evidence-based medicine. A landmark multicenter study published in The Lancet has marked a turning point for international clinical recognition of TCM. While some studies, such as those investigating An Gong Niu Huang Wan for acute stroke, have failed to show efficacy beyond a placebo effect, other randomized controlled trials continue to investigate the physiological impacts of specific herbal formulas for conditions like Type 2 diabetes.
