Traditional molasses production boosts local economies in Turkey
In various regions of Turkey, traditional molasses production is providing significant economic benefits to local communities and women. In the Yavuzkemal town of Giresun, a municipal project titled “Women are Producing in Yavuzkemal Town” has enabled women to transform apples, pears, and Isabella grapes into high-value molasses.
These organic products, produced without the use of fertilizers or pesticides, are seeing high demand both within Turkey and internationally, with prices reaching between 6,000 and 7,000 Turkish Lira for 5 kilograms. Local officials note that the project aims to diversify income sources and support family budgets.
Similarly, in Amasya, villagers continue the labor-intensive tradition of grape molasses production. In the Yukarı Baraklı village, residents excavate clay-rich soil from rocky areas to use in the process. This specific soil is essential for balancing the acidity of the grape juice and ensuring the clarity of the final product. The production involves communal efforts from both men and women, who prepare the molasses for winter consumption and market sale.
