Central American unrest: Fuel protests and independence parades

Central America is experiencing significant social and civil unrest. In Honduras, various organizations and labor unions have launched protests against rising fuel prices, the potential privatization of the National Electric Energy Company (ENEE), and deficiencies in the public health system. Demonstrators, including the National Resistance Front (FNRP), have marched in Tegucigalpa to denounce neoliberal policies and economic instability under the administration of President Nasry Asfura.

Simultaneously, Honduras is preparing for its 205th Independence Day celebrations. The Central District Municipal Mayor’s office has announced extensive road closures and traffic operations in Tegucigalpa and Comayagüela to accommodate school parades and military demonstrations, including a high-altitude parachute display by the Armed Forces. In response to a water crisis, local authorities have also launched operations to prevent dengue outbreaks caused by improper water storage.

In Guatemala, protesters have engaged in widespread road blockades across several key highways to protest fuel price increases and demand subsidies. While government intervention and court orders have cleared some major arteries, such as the Anillo Periférico, multiple blockades remain active in regions including Petén, Zacapa, and various routes in the north and south of the country.
