Traffic regulations and penalties for vehicle misuse

Traffic regulations in Brazil outline specific penalties for improper vehicle operation and cargo transport. Under Article 252 of the Brazilian Traffic Code, resting a foot on the clutch pedal is considered a medium infraction. This habit can result in a fine of approximately R$ 130.16 and four points on a driver's license, while also causing premature mechanical wear to the vehicle's components.

Regarding cargo, CONTRAN Resolution 349/2010 mandates that items transported on a vehicle's roof must be secured using appropriate racks or closed luggage carriers. Transporting items directly on the car body without proper supports is a serious infraction under Article 248, carrying a fine of R$ 195.23 and five points on the driver's license. If cargo falls onto the roadway, the violation is upgraded to a very serious infraction, costing R$ 293.47 and seven points. Additionally, cargo must not exceed 50 centimeters in height above the support, nor can it obstruct the driver's view or exceed the vehicle's width and weight limits.
