Traffic safety concerns rise in Brazil amid power pole collisions and rising injuries

In observance of National Traffic Day, Equatorial Maranhão has issued warnings regarding vehicle collisions with electrical power poles. In 2025, the company recorded 1,548 accidents involving power poles across the state of Maranhão. Between January and August 2026, 608 power outages were caused by such collisions. The most affected municipalities include São Luís, São José de Ribamar, Balsas, Imperatriz, and Caxias. Primary causes identified include speeding, intoxication, inattention, and disregard for traffic signals.

Parallel to infrastructure concerns, medical data highlights the rising severity of traffic-related injuries in Brazil. According to Ministry of Health data, hospitalizations for motorcyclists due to traffic injuries rose from 70,508 in 2011 to 115,709 in 2021, a 55% increase. By 2021, motorcyclists accounted for 61% of all traffic injury hospitalizations. Medical experts emphasize that protective gear, such as helmets, is critical in preventing traumatic brain injuries (TBI), which can result from sudden deceleration even without skull fractures.
