Trafikverket advances planning for Ostlänken and Norrbotniabanan railways

Trafikverket has announced key planning decisions regarding two major Swedish railway projects: Ostlänken and Norrbotniabanan.

For the Ostlänken project, authorities have decided to proceed with a grade-separated connection to the Southern Main Line at Torvinge, east of Linköping. This decision follows updated national infrastructure plans for 2026–2037, which specify that the line will terminate at Torvinge rather than extending into central Linköping. The chosen solution aims to be resource-efficient while meeting necessary capacity requirements.

Regarding the Norrbotniabanan, a preferred route has been identified for the section between the Västerbotten/Norrbotten border and Munksund, specifically through southern Piteå. The plan involves constructing a fixed high bridge, approximately 30 meters tall, over Pitsund to accommodate shipping needs and reduce maintenance uncertainties. The proposed route aims to minimize impact on residential areas and reindeer husbandry by following Havsbadsvägen.
