Train derailment in Normandy, France, injures 44 people
A regional passenger train derailed in Normandy, France, near the town of Cléon on Friday evening, September 11, 2026. The train, traveling between Rouen and Caen with approximately 180 to 186 passengers on board, derailed at around 19:45 local time.
Authorities reported that at least 44 people were injured in the accident. Among the victims, an 18-year-old woman was evacuated in critical condition via helicopter to Rouen University Hospital. Local officials activated the Orsec NOVI mass-casualty response plan, deploying approximately 140 firefighters, medical teams, and emergency vehicles to the scene.
Investigators are examining the cause of the derailment. A piece of rail was discovered on the tracks, leading police to investigate whether the incident was accidental or a deliberate act of sabotage. While the prosecutor's office has urged caution regarding claims of a malicious act, the presence of the metal object on the tracks is being treated as a significant lead. Drug and alcohol tests conducted on the train driver returned negative results. Rail services between Rouen, Caen, and Le Havre were temporarily suspended, with SNCF implementing replacement bus services.
