Train derailment in Normandy, France

Overview

A passenger train derailed on the Rouen-Caen line near Cléon in northwestern France on the evening of September 11, 2026, injuring at least 44 people. The train, carrying between 180 and 186 passengers, saw five carriages leave the rails and one overturn after colliding with an object on the tracks.

Emergency services activated the Orsec NOVI mass-casualty response plan, deploying approximately 140 firefighters, multiple medical teams, and 80 vehicles to the scene. While an 18-year-old woman was initially evacuated to Rouen University Hospital in critical condition, authorities have since reported that her condition has improved and her life is no longer in danger. Most other injured passengers have been discharged from the hospital.

Investigators are focusing on a piece of rail discovered on the tracks, weighing between 250 and 300 kilograms, which may have caused the incident. While some politicians and regional officials have suggested the incident might be a criminal act or sabotage, Rouen prosecutor Sébastien Gallois stated there is currently “no evidence of a malicious act with the deliberate intention to derail the train, and even less so for an attack.”

Drug and alcohol tests for the train driver were negative. Police and technical investigators have recovered the train’s black box and continue to work to determine how the rail fragment ended up on the tracks. A judicial investigation and a technical inquiry by the Bureau of Enquiry on Land Transport Accidents (BEA-TT) have been launched. SNCF Réseau previously suspended services between Rouen, Caen, and Le Havre, providing temporary bus services during the investigation.
