Hellenic Train suspends service between Thessaloniki and Litochoro after fire

Early on 12 July 2026, a fire broke out near the railway lines between Thessaloniki and Litochoro, prompting Hellenic Train to halt train traffic and electrical supply on the section at 04:50. The incident forced the 1590 service (Laris‑Thessaloniki) to remain at Litochoro station, while the 1591 and 1592 services stayed at Thessaloniki and Laris. The intercity IC51 (Thessaloniki‑Athens) with about 200 passengers was replaced by buses. Hellenic Train said it is coordinating with the infrastructure manager OSE and relevant authorities to restore operations as quickly as possible.

A separate fire occurred shortly after 05:00 on a commercial train near the Platy station, Greece. The blaze originated in the braking system and battery of the locomotive, but fire crews from the Alexandroupoli fire brigade quickly contained it, preventing spread to nearby dry vegetation. No injuries were reported and the incident caused only temporary disruption to local rail traffic. Authorities are investigating the cause.

Both events underline heightened fire risk for Greece’s rail network during the dry season and prompted Hellenic Train to adjust schedules and provide bus replacements for affected passengers.
