Romania boosts power generation and grid with solar farms, nuclear restart and high‑voltage upgrades
Romania is expanding its energy mix and strengthening its transmission network. Enexus, in partnership with Turkey’s Astor Energy, signed an EPC contract for a 75 MW solar park in Alba Iulia that will include a 220 kV substation. In Giurgiu County, construction began on the Ogrezeni hybrid solar‑plus‑storage project, the country’s largest with 761 MWp capacity and over 1 GWh of battery storage. Electrica also awarded an EPC contract for a 78.8 MW solar‑plus‑storage plant.
The country’s nuclear output returned after the Unităţii 2 reactor at Cernavodă was re‑synced to the national grid on 30 May 2026, following replacement of a faulty power‑evacuation transformer. The reactor, contributing roughly 18‑20 % of Romania’s electricity, had been offline for three weeks.
Transelectrica completed a €40 million grid upgrade in Reşiţa, building a new 400 kV transformer station and modernising an existing 220/110 kV facility. The project, part of the Banat 400 kV axis, raises transmission capacity by 1 GW and supports increased cross‑border power exchange with Serbia.
