Orthodox Christians celebrate the Transfiguration of the Lord

Orthodox Christians in Macedonia, Serbia, and Moldova are celebrating the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. This major religious holiday commemorates the biblical event on Mount Tabor where Jesus Christ revealed his divine glory to the apostles Peter, James, and John.

In addition to theological significance, the day is deeply intertwined with regional folk customs and seasonal transitions. In many areas, it marks the symbolic shift from summer to autumn, often referred to as the day when nature “transforms,” with cooler waters and changing foliage.

Key traditions include the blessing of grapes and other seasonal fruits in churches, which are then shared among the community. In Serbian and Macedonian traditions, specific customs are observed, such as avoiding heavy labor or crying on this day, and some believe that making a wish at midnight when the “gates of heaven” open can bring fulfillment. The holiday falls during the Dormition Fast, meaning many believers observe a fasting diet, though fish is permitted on this occasion.
