The Feast of the Transfiguration is a major Christian holiday commemorating the biblical event where Jesus Christ appeared in radiant light before his apostles on a mountain. Theological interpretations, including those from Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis, emphasize the event as a revelation of divine glory and the proclamation of the Kingdom of God.

Observed on August 19, the feast often falls during the Dormition Fast, a period designated for spiritual reflection and renewal. In Balkan traditions, including those in Macedonia, Serbia, and Moldova, the holiday marks a seasonal transition from summer to autumn. This period is also known in folk tradition as ‘summer Bogoyavlenie’ or ‘Summer Epiphany.’

Religious observances frequently involve the blessing of fruits, such as grapes, which are shared among the community as a sign of gratitude for the harvest. Traditional meals during this period often feature fish, which is permitted despite the fasting period. Regional customs include harvesting hazelnuts for medicinal purposes or tying red or white thread around the wrist to make wishes. Some traditions suggest that making a wish while looking at the sky at midnight, when the ‘gates of heaven’ are believed to open, can lead to its fulfillment.

Folk beliefs suggest that nature undergoes a transformation as leaves change color and river waters become colder, signaling the end of the swimming season. Additionally, certain folk prohibitions exist to discourage negative habits or misfortune; these include advice against sleeping during the day, crying, or spending excessive time in taverns. Weather on this day is also believed to predict future seasons, where sunny weather may signal a long autumn followed by a harsh winter.
