Canadian transportation workers escalate labour disputes

Labour disputes are escalating across Canada's transportation sector. In the railway industry, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Canadian Signals and Communications Systems Council No. 11 has continued an 11-week strike against CPKC. Union members overwhelmingly rejected CPKC’s latest contract offer, with 256 members voting against it. The strike, which began on May 31, involves approximately 300 workers and centers on disputes regarding wages, employee expenses, on-call obligations, and demanding schedules.

Simultaneously, transit workers in British Columbia have issued 72-hour strike notices. Unifor Local 111 and Local 2200, representing transit operators and skilled trades for the Coast Mountain Bus Company in Metro Vancouver, have announced a uniform ban starting Monday. In Victoria, Unifor Local 333-BC has also issued a 72-hour strike notice to BC Transit. While these workers plan to begin a uniform ban on August 17, they have indicated that they do not currently intend to fully withdraw service, though they remain in a legal strike position as negotiations over wages and recovery times remain unresolved.
