Transnet Freight Rail sets potential world record with 696-wagon train
Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) in South Africa successfully operated a cargo train consisting of 696 wagons, potentially setting a new Guinness World Record. The train, which spanned approximately 7.5 kilometers, traveled from Saldanha to the Northern Cape via the Iron Ore Export Line.
The operation utilized a Radio Distributed Power (RDP) system to synchronize 15E electric and 43D diesel-electric locomotives across the train's length. This technology allowed for real-time monitoring and control of traction forces, which helps mitigate risks such as derailment or infrastructure strain during long-haul operations.
This feat surpasses the previous record set in 2001 by BHP Australia, which involved a 682-wagon train. While the South African operation used empty wagons, TFR CEO Russell Baatjies stated that the achievement provides significant technical knowledge and operational data for the national rail industry. Evidence of the journey has been submitted to Guinness World Records for official verification.
