Transnet Freight Rail long-train operation

Overview

Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) conducted an engineering test on the Sishen–Saldanha iron ore export corridor involving a 696-wagon empty iron ore train. Measuring approximately 7.5 to 7.6 kilometers in length, the operation traveled from Saldanha to the Northern Cape.

The train utilized a Radio Distributed Power (RDP) system to synchronize 15E electric and 43D diesel-electric locomotives, allowing for real-time monitoring of traction forces to mitigate derailment risks and infrastructure strain. This operation potentially sets a new world record, surpassing the previous 2001 mark of 682 wagons set in Western Australia. TFR CEO Russell Baatjies noted that the achievement provides “significant technical knowledge and operational data for the national rail industry.” Evidence of the journey has been submitted to Guinness World Records for official verification.
