TransnetBW completes construction on Ultranet power line section
TransnetBW has completed the construction of the 42-kilometer Ultranet B1 section between Mannheim-Wallstadt and Philippsburg. This segment is part of a larger 340-kilometer direct current (DC) connection designed to transport renewable energy between North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg.
The Ultranet project aims to facilitate the transfer of up to two gigawatts of electricity in both directions, supporting consumption centers in southern Germany. A notable feature of the project is the extensive use of existing transmission routes, where DC and AC lines are carried on the same masts.
While TransnetBW has finished its section, Amprion remains responsible for the approximately 300-kilometer northern section from Meerbusch-Osterath to Mannheim-Wallstadt. Further technical work and testing are required before the first electricity flow is expected by the end of 2026.
