German power grid expansion projects

Overview

Transnet BW is managing various large-scale energy transition projects in Germany. In late September 2026, construction on the Südlink power line was temporarily halted in Bad Friedrichshall-Kochendorf due to geological findings in an old salt mine. The operator is working with Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke to redesign the underground cable installation.

By late October 2026, Transnet BW reported the completion of a 42-kilometer section of the Ultranet project between Mannheim-Wallstadt and Philippsburg. This segment is part of a larger 340-kilometer direct current connection intended to transport renewable energy between North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg. While this specific section is finished, technical testing and work on the remaining northern section by Amprion are required before electricity flow begins.
