Transnistria shifts economic focus toward EU despite Russian ties

Transnistria, the separatist region of Moldova, is increasingly navigating a pragmatic economic relationship with the European Union despite its political ties to Russia. In 2025, 71 percent of the region's exports were directed toward the EU market, with major destinations including Romania, Poland, and Italy. Additionally, imports from the EU accounted for 48 percent of the region's total imports.

While the territory remains a tool for Russian influence and maintains a Russian military presence, its economic survival is becoming tied to Western markets. This shift highlights a disconnect between the region's Soviet-era symbolism and its current economic reality, where local elites and businesses prioritize market access over ideological alignment.
