NSW rail infrastructure to undergo major upgrades for new fleet

Transport for NSW has announced extensive infrastructure upgrades to accommodate a new Regional Rail Fleet. The project involves modifications to 117 stations and 221 platforms across New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, and the Australian Capital Territory, covering more than 6,700 kilometres of track.

Planned works include platform resurfacing, accessibility improvements, new lighting and fencing, drainage upgrades, and the installation of assisted boarding infrastructure. The project also involves site investigations and vegetation management.

The full fleet of 29 trains is intended to replace the existing XPT, Xplorer, and Endeavour fleets. Currently, three trains are undergoing testing for bi-modal capability, utilizing both diesel and overhead electric power. A formal entry-into-service timeline will be determined following successful testing, certification, and safety accreditation by the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator.
