NSW regional rail service and infrastructure upgrades
Overview
Transport for NSW is implementing several initiatives to modernize regional rail services. In late 2026, a three-month trial of free onboard Wi-Fi was launched on selected NSW TrainLink long-distance services, including Xplorer and XPT routes. This trial utilizes Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology combined with 4G and 5G cellular communications to improve digital connectivity for regional passengers.
Concurrently, extensive infrastructure upgrades have been announced to accommodate a new Regional Rail Fleet of 29 trains, which is intended to replace the existing XPT, Xplorer, and Endeavour fleets. The project involves modifications to 117 stations and 221 platforms across New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, and the Australian Capital Territory, covering over 6,700 kilometres of track. Planned works include platform resurfacing, accessibility improvements, and the installation of assisted boarding infrastructure. Testing is currently underway for bi-modal trains capable of using both diesel and overhead electric power.
