TransUnion report: 30% of Gen Z drivers have operated uninsured vehicles

Research from TransUnion indicates that approximately 30% of Gen Z drivers admitted to owning or driving an uninsured vehicle within the last six months. This generation shows a higher rate of uninsured driving compared to other age groups, including Millennials (17%), Gen X (7%), and Baby Boomers (1%).

According to the report, the reasons for lack of coverage vary among Gen Z respondents. While 26% cited an inability to pay due to affordability challenges, 28% stated they simply chose not to renew their coverage. Other factors included forgetting to pay on time (22%) and being dropped by a previous insurer (20%).

TransUnion suggests that insurers may need to utilize tools like telematics and accident histories to better assess the risk of coverage lapses in this demographic. The report also recommends educational outreach and more flexible coverage options to encourage younger drivers to maintain insurance.
