Gen Z uninsured driving trends in the US
Overview
Research from TransUnion indicates that approximately 30% of Generation Z drivers in the United States admitted to owning or driving an uninsured vehicle within the last six months. This rate is notably higher than other age groups, such as Millennials (17%), Gen X (7%), and Baby Boomers (1%).
Drivers cited several reasons for the lack of coverage. While 26% of respondents noted an inability to pay due to affordability challenges, 28% stated they “simply chose not to renew their coverage.” Other factors included forgetting to pay on time (22%) and being dropped by a previous insurer (20%).
Economic pressures, such as rising gasoline prices and general cost-of-living increases, are contributing to this trend. Additionally, data from LexisNexis shows a record high in consumer activity, with over 47% of car insurance policies being “shopped” at least once between 2024 and 2025, suggesting consumers are increasingly seeking better pricing or different providers.
