Trapani prison guard assaulted during duty

A prison guard from the Polizia Penitenziaria was assaulted while on duty at the Pietro Cerulli prison in Trapani, Italy. The officer sustained a fractured nose and was issued a 10-day medical prognosis following the incident.

The union SINAPPE has expressed solidarity with the officer and used the event to highlight ongoing security concerns for prison staff. Rocco Parrinello, the regional vice-secretary for SINAPPE Sicily, stated that such incidents necessitate strengthening staff numbers and providing adequate protective equipment. While 20 new prison police officers are expected to arrive in Sicily soon, the union maintains that further measures are required to ensure effective coverage and safety.
