Travel insurance provides essential coverage for medical and trip disruptions
Travel insurance serves as a financial safety net for travelers, covering risks such as medical emergencies, flight delays, cancellations, and luggage issues. Experts emphasize that insurance can mitigate the high costs of unexpected illnesses, severe weather disruptions, or lost valuables.
A review by the consumer organization Which? of over 160 policies from 47 companies highlighted significant variations in coverage. The Saga Plus Annual Multi-Trip policy received the highest rating (82%) for its comprehensive scope, which includes coverage for terrorism, pandemics (excluding COVID-19), and missed connections. In contrast, the Just Travel Good2Go Extra Bronze received the lowest rating (21%) due to its limited focus on emergency medical situations.
Key recommendations for selecting a policy include ensuring medical coverage is at least £5 million, trip cancellation coverage of at least £2,000, and baggage protection of at least £1,500. Travelers are also advised to disclose all medical conditions, including undiagnosed issues currently under investigation, to avoid claim denials. While many policies exclude disruptions caused by war or military action, specific extensions may be available to cover such events.
