Recent reports highlight the complexities and variations in travel insurance coverage, emphasizing the importance of consumer awareness regarding policy limitations.

A survey of 4,700 travelers in the US found significant gaps in the perceived protections of travel credit cards. Many cardholders were unaware of specific exclusions, such as limitations on pre-existing medical conditions, reimbursement caps on trip cancellations, and the requirement that full fares be charged to the specific card to trigger benefits. Additionally, nearly half of those surveyed did not realize that many cards provide minimal emergency medical coverage while abroad.

In the UK, a review of over 160 policies by the consumer organization Which? revealed wide disparities in coverage quality. While some policies were highly rated for including protections against terrorism and pandemics, others were criticized for limited emergency medical focus. Experts recommend that travelers ensure medical coverage is at least £5 million and trip cancellation coverage is at least £2,000, while advising full disclosure of all medical conditions to prevent claim denials.
