Travel trends show rising demand for cultural immersion and off-the-beaten-path destinations

Recent travel industry reports indicate a significant shift in traveler priorities toward cultural immersion and less crowded, undiscovered locations. According to Skift’s State of Travel 2026 report, cultural immersion has become the leading travel priority globally, surpassing adventure and luxury. In North America, 39% of travelers identify as cultural immersion seekers.

While interest in language travel is growing, experts note a distinction between formal language classes and true immersion. Traditional formats often involve groups of English speakers who return to their native tongue once lessons conclude, which can limit practical conversational skills. Additionally, research suggests that sustained language learning may offer cognitive benefits for older adults.

Expedia’s Unpack ’27 Travel Trends report highlights a surge in interest for specific destinations as travelers seek to avoid crowds. Notable trending locations include South Lake Tahoe, California, which saw a 195% increase in search interest, Hyogo, Japan, with a 95% increase, and Punta del Este, Uruguay, which experienced a 65% rise in interest.
