Deutsche Bahn faces criticism over holiday ticket price surges
The Federal Association of Consumer Organisations (VZBV) is calling for increased transparency regarding Deutsche Bahn's pricing structures. An analysis by the VZBV revealed that train ticket prices frequently spike during holiday periods. In 62 percent of the studied route and holiday combinations, prices on the first Saturday of a holiday were higher than the previous week.
Significant price increases were noted in the Super Sparpreis category, with costs rising by at least 21 percent in half of the cases studied. In extreme instances, such as the Berlin-Munich route during the 2025 winter holidays, prices reportedly jumped from 17.99 euros to 99.99 euros, an increase of 456 percent. VZBV board member Ramona Pop emphasized that travelers must be able to reliably estimate costs.
Deutsche Bahn has rejected the allegations of a lack of transparency. A spokesperson stated that the booking system provides the cheapest available offers when users input their age and applicable discounts, such as the BahnCard or Deutschland-Ticket, noting that pricing is primarily driven by demand.
