Phishing scams targeting travelers via stolen booking data

Overview

Authorities and cybersecurity experts have issued warnings regarding a sophisticated phishing scam targeting travelers through various digital channels, including WhatsApp, SMS, and email.

Scammers utilize stolen guest information—such as full names, contact details, and specific booking reference numbers—to create a sense of legitimacy and urgency. In some instances, criminals demand immediate payments or sensitive credit card information under the guise of mandatory data verification or reservation deposits. These fraudulent messages often claim that a booking will only be maintained if the requested action is completed immediately.

The compromised data is believed to originate from previous security incidents and data leaks. Reports indicate the scam is active in regions including Belgium and Germany, with officials noting that the stolen details may be linked to a cyberattack on a tourism service provider’s booking software. Experts advise travelers to verify any payment or data requests by contacting their accommodation providers directly through official channels rather than clicking on links provided in messages.
