Travelers warned of booking scams and deceptive offers
Travelers are being warned to exercise caution when booking last-minute accommodations due to deceptive marketing tactics and fraudulent rental listings.
Online booking platforms often use high-pressure tactics, such as claiming there is ‘only one room left’ or showing countdown timers for promotions. These messages may only apply to specific room types or prices rather than the entire hotel. Additionally, ‘recommended’ listings may be driven by advertising partnerships rather than quality, and initial prices may not include mandatory cleaning or service fees.
Criminals are also publishing fake advertisements for apartments and holiday homes using attractive photos and low prices to lure victims. Once a deposit is paid, the scammers often cut off contact, and the property may not exist or be available for rent. To avoid fraud, experts recommend using reputable booking services, verifying addresses via satellite imagery, contacting owners directly by phone, and avoiding payments to private bank accounts or clicking suspicious links.
