José Roberto Arruda barred from Federal District governorship by TSE

The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) has rejected the candidacy of José Roberto Arruda (PSD) for the government of the Federal District. In a 5-2 vote, the court upheld the decision that Arruda is ineligible due to multiple convictions for administrative improbity stemming from Operação Caixa de Pandora.

Relator Dias Toffoli argued that the infractions are independent, meaning the ineligibility period cannot be unified under recent legislative changes. Consequently, Arruda faces ineligibility that could extend until 2030. The ruling also mandates the suspension of his campaign funds and the removal of his name from electronic voting machines.

However, the removal from voting machines presents a technical challenge, as the sealing process for over a thousand machines had already begun. Arruda announced he will not appeal the decision, stating that further legal attempts would only delay the elections in Brasília. He also requested that voters disregard his name if it appears on the ballot.
