TRE-SE sets rules for Porto da Folha supplementary election
The Regional Electoral Court of Sergipe (TRE-SE) has established the rules and schedule for a supplementary election in Porto da Folha to select a new mayor and vice-mayor. The election is scheduled to coincide with the second round of the 2026 general elections, a move intended to optimize logistics and reduce operational costs by utilizing the existing electoral infrastructure.
The decision to hold a new vote follows the revocation of the mandates of Mayor Everton Lima and Vice-Mayor Franksaine de Souza Freitas. In February 2026, the court recognized the abuse of social media and communication channels during the 2024 electoral campaign.
Under the new regulations, political parties may hold conventions between September 2 and September 6, with the deadline for candidate registration set for September 10. The official campaign period begins on September 11. While there will be no free airtime on radio or television, other forms of propaganda are permitted. The rules specifically prohibit telemarketing, mass messaging, and the use of deepfakes, while requiring clear identification for content produced or modified by artificial intelligence.
