Brazilian municipal mandate revocations
Overview
The Regional Electoral Court of Tocantins (TRE-TO) has unanimously upheld the removal of Mayor Bruna Gabrielle Neves Pires de Araújo from office. The ruling follows a determination that there was an abuse of political and economic power during the 2024 elections.
Because the court deemed the electoral ticket indivisible, the mandate of the vice-mayor, Abraão Carolino da Silva, was also revoked. However, the court removed the personal ineligibility sanction for Silva due to a lack of evidence regarding his participation in the irregularities. Silva has indicated his intention to run in the resulting supplementary elections.
Mayor Bruna Gabrielle has been sentenced to eight years of ineligibility. The president of the City Council is expected to serve as interim mayor until the new elections are conducted. Additionally, the court has requested that the Public Prosecutor’s Office investigate potential crimes against public administration and administrative improbity.
