Brazil electoral courts begin preparing voting machines for 2026 elections

Regional Electoral Courts across Brazil have begun the technical preparation of electronic voting machines for the 2026 elections. In São Paulo, the TRE-SP is preparing 114,500 machines, including over 28,000 for the capital. In Tocantins, the TRE-TO has initiated the process of generating media and loading electoral data into machines for 4,384 sections. Similarly, Pernambuco is preparing 23,979 machines across 18 poles, with distribution expected to be largely completed by October 2.

To ensure security, the machines operate in isolation without connections to the internet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth. Data transfer is conducted exclusively via physical media prepared by the Electoral Justice. In Maranhão, the TRE-MA will utilize Starlink satellite technology to transmit results from 66 remote voting locations, including indigenous villages and islands, to ensure timely totalization.

Voters are reminded that the e-Título app must be activated and validated before election day, as downloads will be unavailable during voting. Additionally, the Electoral Justice clarified that blank or null votes for specific offices do not invalidate votes cast for other positions on the same ballot. For the 2026 cycle, voting will follow a unified schedule from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Brasília time.
