Australia's Jim Chalmers warns rising debt and bond yields will limit budget spending

Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers has warned that rising bond yields and increased debt servicing costs will limit the government's ability to provide significant new cost-of-living relief. With federal debt exceeding $1 trillion and the Reserve Bank of Australia raising interest rates to a 15-year high of 4.6 percent, Chalmers indicated the government will run a “pretty tight ship” in its upcoming mid-year budget update.

Chalmers attributed much of the domestic inflation challenge to external factors, specifically citing the war in the Middle East as a driver of global price pressures. He noted that while public demand has halved over the last year, private demand has tripled, suggesting that budget settings are not the primary driver of current inflation rates.

Political pressure is mounting as recent polling shows a decline in favorability for both Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Treasurer Chalmers. Polling indicates that One Nation has overtaken Labor as the country's most popular party on key issues such as the cost of living, housing affordability, and immigration. Meanwhile, political debates continue regarding government spending on renewable energy and the necessity of essential service cuts to manage the deficit.
