Trebur walker discovers smoking WWII phosphorus grenade

A walker in Trebur discovered a smoking World War II phosphorus grenade along the banks of the Rhine river near Kornsand during a night walk on August 12.

The discovery was caused by low water levels in the Rhine, which exposed the relic. Once the phosphorus came into contact with oxygen in the air, it began to smoke due to oxidation. The South Hesse Police Headquarters dispatched the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (KMRD), who successfully neutralized and removed the grenade, eliminating the immediate danger.

Police have advised the public to maintain distance and immediately notify authorities if such objects are found, warning against touching or moving any discovered munitions.
