Discovery of World War II ordnance in Germany

Overview

In mid-August 2026, two separate incidents involving World War II unexploded ordnance were reported in Germany.

In Dötlingen, two children using metal detectors discovered a transportable grenade on a campsite playground. Police commended the children, stating, “Sie haben sich genau richtig verhalten” (They behaved exactly right), after they alerted emergency services. Bomb disposal experts recovered and removed the device without requiring a full evacuation of the site.

In Trebur, a walker discovered a smoking phosphorus grenade on the banks of the Rhine river. The relic had been exposed due to low water levels, and the phosphorus began smoking upon contact with oxygen. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service successfully neutralized and removed the grenade.
