Tree and shrub care: Autumn pruning and drought stress warnings

Autumn is a key period for shrub maintenance, focusing on removing dead, diseased, or damaged wood and thinning out overly dense plants. Species such as privet, hazel, and honeysuckle are suitable for targeted maintenance during this time. However, gardeners are advised to avoid radical pruning of spring-flowering shrubs like magnolia, as this can remove next year's buds. It is also important to respect local wildlife, such as nesting birds or hedgehogs, before beginning work.

Separately, experts are noting premature leaf loss in trees during September. Hajo Hinrichs, President of the Federal Association of German Nurseries (BdB), explains that this is often a symptom of drought stress and prolonged heat rather than a protective measure. Species with high water requirements, such as birch and beech, are particularly vulnerable. In some regions, falling groundwater levels prevent roots from reaching necessary moisture. The full extent of such damage is often only visible in the following spring during new growth.
