Tree-planting initiatives implemented in Burundi and Burkina Faso

Local communities in Burundi and Burkina Faso are implementing tree-planting initiatives to address environmental concerns and administrative needs.

In Burundi, the ‘Ewe Burundi Urambaye’ national program has led to reforestation on the Cene mountain range in Gitega province. Residents report that the trees have significantly reduced soil erosion and landslides during heavy rains, which previously caused land loss and property damage. Local authorities are working to protect these trees from bushfires, and residents have committed to preserving the forest by only collecting fallen dry branches.

In Tangaye, Burkina Faso, community members organized a tree-planting session to spatially delimit public service areas, including the prefecture and a local education district site. Using eucalyptus trees to mark these boundaries, the initiative aligns with national goals to define administrative spaces while simultaneously contributing to environmental protection and climate change mitigation efforts.
